Chip's Challenge Level Pack 1, often abbreviated as CCLP1, is the third community level pack released on March 28, 2014. Although the name CCLP1 suggests it is the first of a series of level packs, this level pack was released after both CCLP2 and CCLP3. The confusing name is a reference to the fact that CCLP1 is designed specifically for beginners to learn and experience the basics of the game before moving on to the more difficult CCLP2 and CCLP3.
Part of the motivation of designing CCLP1 for beginners was due to the legal status of the original Chip's Challenge 1 level set. Back in 2014, the game itself could no longer be legally obtained and the original copyrighted level pack could not be freely distributed outside of the game; this would be true up until May 2015, when Chip's Challenge 1 was re-released on Steam along with the official sequel, Chip's Challenge 2. CCLP1 addressed this problem as a free, community-created level pack which players can use with free alternate game engines like Tile World.
CCLP1 was released a week up from the original release date after members of the community solved five puzzles related to CCLP1 on the community forum CC Zone. A trailer was released on March 23, 2014 showcasing some of the levels in CCLP1 as a reward for solving these puzzles.

Title selection[edit]
There has been some debate as to whether this level pack should actually be titled CCLP1, mainly to avoid confusion with CC1 - the original game and level set. Alternative names such as CCLP0 and TWLP1, short for Tile World Level Pack 1, have been suggested. However, the name CCLP1 has stood the test of time and, as of 2019, the majority of the community is in favor of retaining the title.
Staff[edit]
J.B. Lewis was appointed staff coordinator after a community vote at the end of August 2011. The community was also in favor of allowing the coordinator to appoint the remaining staff. Accordingly, a staff list was announced a couple of weeks later. The list of staff members at the time of the set's release were as follows:
Name | Role |
---|---|
J.B. Lewis | Staff Coordinator |
Dave Varberg | Staff Speaker |
The Architect | Content Creator |
James Anderson | Webmaster |
Tom Patten | Voting Coordinator |
Rock Généreux | MS Playtester |
Shane Climenhaga | MS Playtester |
Tyler Sontag | Lynx Playtester |
Paul Gilbert | Lynx Playtester |
Design and assembly[edit]
As with all community-created level packs, the plan was for Chipsters to vote on levels from custom level sets and select the best 149. The special introductory nature of this set demanded levels that were similar in design to those from CC1, i.e. levels with aesthetically pleasing and consistent design, and levels without difficult puzzles. The first few levels are "lesson" levels that teach new players what each tile does.
Like CC1, the level set is compatible with both the Lynx and MS rulesets. Suggestions that levels also conform to some or all "pedantic" Lynx rules were considered, but voted against, as it was felt that this would be unnecessarily restrictive.[1]
The following levels were confirmed to be in the set prior to its release, revealed by the CCLP1 leaks.
- Dynamite by Michael Moorman
- Time Suspension: Part II by Rock Généreux
- Whirlpool by J.B. Lewis
- Deserted Battlefield by Rosabellis
- Metal Harbor by Tyler Sontag
Other levels confirmed in the official CCLP1 trailer:
- Twister by Vehudur

Voting process[edit]
To narrow down the levels that appeared on the ballot, the staff performed a pre-voting elimination. The "whitelist" was then finalized with inputs from the community: "limbo" levels that were fixed by their designers, and "blacklisted" levels that were nominated by at least 2 people (other than the designer), were re-considered for the whitelist.
CCLP1 voting was being conducted on the community forums at CC Zone. Tom Patten was appointed Voting Coordinator.
There were a couple of key changes in the voting mechanism compared to that used for CCLP2 and CCLP3, namely:
- Voters needed to provide only a single rating ranking each level (no separate "difficulty" rating)
- The submitted levels were grouped randomly into different level packs for voters to play and vote on.
The level packs were available for download from CC Zone as well as the Yahoo group.
Voting packs[edit]
From May 31 to August 28, 2013, 33 voting packs were released for CCLP1. All packs contained 50 levels, with the exception of the final pack containing only 47, for a total of 1,647 levels.
