Chip's Challenge Wiki:Talk page

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Talk pages are used for communication between editors in a wiki. There are two kinds of talk pages — standard talk pages, such as the ones used to discuss an article, a template, a category, etc., while user talk pages are used to communicate with other users or leave them messages.

Every page has an associated talk page, except pages in the Special: namespace. If nobody has ever posted on a talk page, then the link will be red. You can still discuss the page - you will just be the first person to edit the talk page.

Article talk pages are provided for discussion of the content of articles. They should not be used by editors to express their personal views.

Accessing a talk page

To access a talk page, look for a tab labelled Talk, Discussion or Discuss this page. These links will be found either at the top of the page or on the left hand side (near Edit this page).

The namespace of a talk page is Talk: with the page's title after the namespace. If the main page has a prefix then talk is added after this prefix.

If someone leaves a message on your talk page, the alert "You have new messages" is automatically displayed on all pages you view until you view your user page.

Using talk pages

You should sign and date your contributions on all talk pages by typing four tildes: (~~~~), which will yield something like this: Example 15:44, March 29 2024 (UTC).

The "Post a comment" feature (the small "+" sign on a separate tab, at the top of a talk page) allows you to start a new section without needing to edit the whole page. The section header becomes the edit summary at the time you save the page, so there is no edit summary displayed when you use this feature.

Formatting

If you are the first to post a comment, you don't have to do anything. However, after this, it is recommended you use colons (':') at the start of your comment. For example:

How's the soup? --John
:It's great!! --Jane
::Not too bad.. --George
:::I made it myself! --John
I think the soup-discussion should be moved to Talk:Soup.. --Jane
:I tend to disagree. --George

Doing so will produce this:

How's the soup? --John

It's great!! --Jane
Not too bad.. --George
I made it myself! --John

I think the soup-discussion should be moved to Talk:Soup.. --Jane

I tend to disagree. --George

Question

For level https://wiki.bitbusters.club/Rink there is a way

URU 2D LDL 2R 2U R 2U 2R UR (RUDR 2D) 2D R (RLDL) 3D 2:[2L 2D] ULU 2L 2:[DLDRD] 2R (2R U) D 2U D (3R 2U 3:LU [2L] 2U 2L DL 2D LD) 2D L 2U (2L D) 2R 2U LU 2D R.

Please how am I supposed to understand the ":" the "()" and the "[]"?

Is there somewhere in this wiki some explanation? Thanks in advance! 185.229.190.131 14:54, 8 August 2019 (CDT)

Yes, you are probably looking for this page here: Directional notation. We should definitely look in to linking to this page anywhere that this notation is being used. Cowman (talk) 00:46, 9 August 2019 (CDT)
Thanks for the link BUT it's WAY TOO COMPLICATED !!! For instance, in the level https://wiki.bitbusters.club/Rink, "retraced paths" are not always correct (opposite of U is not always D but U too); under "moves" it reads "In mazes with many dead ends such as Chipmine or Mishmesh, writing every move would be cumbersome; directions inside parentheses indicate paths that will be retraced directly after the parentheses close." It's NOT CORRECT (for "Rink") and it would not be "cumbersome", etc. Plus, English is not my mother tongue and I don't want to read something that complicated and long, sometimes i'm not sure about what I'm reading! The BEST is REALLY to put the whole way, no abbreviation please, no code! Thanks in advance 195.181.172.134 10:49, 9 August 2019 (CDT)
I don't necessarily stand by that notation or even claim that it is correct, its just what the original wiki editors took and ran with. I personally agree with you that there are much cleaner ways to present the solutions. I brought this up in our discord server ([1] if you want to join) and there was general agreement that articles could be improved with a simpler notation. I believe another editor is editing the Rink page specifically to simplify it, but for the rest of the levels, we will definitely need to rely on other editors to get involved - it is likely too big a job for one person to tackle themselves. I invite you to help out with improving our notation if you have the time! Cowman (talk) 19:16, 9 August 2019 (CDT)
Thanks for your comments. I will think about joining the team to help a little. Cheers! 195.181.172.134 11:15, 13 August 2019 (CDT)
