Cloners in [[Chip's Challenge 2]] work like solid [[trap]]s that immediately close upon opening, and create a copy of the released monster to stay behind on the cloner. The direction they clone is based on the direction the entity to be cloned is facing in - the direction shown on the cloner is purely aesthetic.
For [[movable object]]s that can enter clone machines in [[Chip's Challenge 2]], cloners work like solid [[trap]]s that immediately close upon opening, and create a copy of the released monster to stay behind on the cloner. The direction they clone is based on the direction that the entity to be cloned is facing. The direction shown on the cloner is purely aesthetic during play - it is used by the built-in editor to determine how to place movable objects on the cloner.

The player can push [[ice block]]s and [[directional block]]s into empty clone machines, and it will dispense clones of that item when activated in the direction the block is facing. The clone machine will also trap [[bowling ball]]s crossing its tile, forming a bowling ball clone machine. If the exit of a clone machine connected to [[wire]] is blocked when the machine is activated, the machine will permanently turn clockwise and try again in its new direction (unless all four directions are blocked when the clone machine is activated). When this happens, the direction of the entity on top will update, but the visual direction of the clone machine itself will not.
[[Ice block]]s and [[directional block]]s can be pushed into empty clone machines, and it will dispense clones of that object when activated in the direction the block is facing (which for directional blocks is independent of the arrows on its sides). The clone machine will also trap [[bowling ball]]s crossing its tile, forming a bowling ball clone machine. Other creatures that can enter clone machines are [[rover]]s, [[ghost]]s, and [[player mirror]]s.

Player characters can be cloned, but if the currently active player character is on a clone machine, you cannot switch from them, rendering the level softlocked if the player is not cloned by a [[monster]] moving (or a player character involuntarily moving) onto a button which activates it.
If the exit of a clone machine is blocked when the machine is activated by [[wire]], the machine will permanently turn clockwise, try again in its new direction, and repeat until it either finds an open direction or returns to its initial direction (i.e. all four directions are blocked). When this happens, the direction of the entity on top will update, but the visual direction of the clone machine itself will not.

The new "trapped" monster created when a monster is released from a clone machine will never inherit any items from the original monster. So if a bowling ball with a [[fire boot]] is loaded into a clone machine, the first bowling ball clone made will be able to cross [[fire]] (since it's actually the original bowling ball), but subsequent clones will not.
