Part of the motivation of designing CCLP1 for beginners was due to the legal status of the original [[Chip's Challenge 1]] level set. Back in 2014, the game itself could no longer be legally obtained and the original copyrighted level pack could not be freely distributed outside of the game; this would be true up until May 2015, when Chip's Challenge 1 was re-released on Steam along with the official sequel, [[Chip's Challenge 2]]. CCLP1 addressed this problem as a free, community-created level pack which players can use with free alternate game engines like [[Tile World]], and as a result may perhaps still remain a better option than picking up CC1 on Steam, which will cost at least $3 assuming no ongoing sales.
